The Breath Portal

Updated: Dec 9, 2021

It's the morning. Birdsong and gusts of wind make music in the sky while sun rays begin to etch through the clouds. I breathe in the fresh crisp air and remind my brain that there is nothing to fear. No need for that ancient adrenaline response, I am safe.

Breathing deeply and slowly communicates to our nervous systems that there is no threat or danger nearby and we can drop in to a relaxed and blissful state of mind. Breathing deeply allows us to open up the functions of the prefrontal cortex, which is restricted in fear and stress states. Once the portal to the prefrontal cortex has been opened by the breath, we enable clarity of thought, sound decision-making, compassion and empathy - a good start to any day.

Remember to breathe deeply upon waking to remind your brain that you are safe. This is a very simple therapeutic technique that can help us to begin our day grounded in calmness, clarity and love.
