Nature as Medicine

Updated: Dec 9, 2021

We, human beings, are of the Earth. We are indistinguishable from nature. Though we often think of ourselves as separate, the truth is, we are part of the natural world. It is vital to our health and wellbeing that we allow ourselves access to nature. Research shows that interacting with nature decreases stress, anxiety and ruminating thoughts and enhances our empathy and overall wellbeing. When our eyes look upon nature, our ears hear the sounds of nature and our skin feels the touch of nature, our parasympathetic nervous systems activate a response that is calming, soothing and blissful. Being in nature helps to alleviate mental fatigue and restores the body from its adrenalised state.

During times of uncertainty, it is inevitable that we may feel fearful, stressed or anxious. Remember that nature is a potent and soothing medicine for the mind. Take time every day to sit in the garden, go for a walk, or simply look up at the sky.

This a is simple, evidence-based therapeutic technique to help alleviate psychic tension and enhance overall wellbeing. Go outside, put your hands in the earth, feel the wind on your face and observe the power of nature to lift the spirit and calm the mind.
